As winter refuses to loosen its grip, Airlines scrap thousands of flights as another massive winter storm approaches the eastern United States, creating widespread travel chaos and forcing carriers to act swiftly to minimize disruption.
More than 5,000 flights were canceled through Monday as airlines braced for a powerful snowstorm expected to slam airports from Virginia up to Maine. With winter break winding down for many travelers, the timing could hardly be worse. To ease the burden, major carriers began waiving cancellation and change fees for passengers flying through affected airports.
Blizzard Warnings Stretch Across the Northeast
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings covering much of New Jersey, the New York City metropolitan area, and parts of Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Meteorologists warned that certain regions could see more than two feet of snowfall, accompanied by powerful wind gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour.
Forecasters cautioned that travel conditions would become extremely dangerous. Whiteout conditions and near-zero visibility were expected in some areas, making both road and air travel risky.
Major Airports Hit Hard by Cancellations
Air travel disruptions escalated quickly. At John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, roughly two-thirds of scheduled arrivals were called off on Sunday, along with about 40% of departing flights, according to tracking data.
Meanwhile, cancellations mounted at Boston Logan International Airport, where more than 70% of Monday’s departures were scrapped as snowfall intensified. With conditions forecast to worsen before improving, passengers were urged to check flight statuses before heading to the airport.
Why Airlines Cancel Flights Ahead of Storms
Although frustrating for travelers, preemptive cancellations are often a strategic decision. Airlines prefer to ground aircraft and reposition crews before severe weather strikes to prevent planes and staff from being stranded in the wrong cities. This proactive approach helps carriers restart operations more efficiently once conditions improve.
Several major airlines — including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, and Spirit Airlines — waived change fees and fare differences for affected passengers, allowing flexible rebooking through late February.
Southwest Airlines also offered customers the opportunity to modify their bookings without paying a fare difference if they could travel within a two-week window.
Lingering Effects from Previous Winter Disruptions
This isn’t the first time airlines have faced operational strain this winter. In January, Winter Storm Fern — followed by an intense cold snap — disrupted travel across large portions of the United States.
During that period, American Airlines faced significant challenges restoring normal service. Some flight crews reportedly became stranded, with employees forced to sleep in airports as schedules unraveled. The operational breakdown fueled criticism from frontline staff and added pressure on CEO Robert Isom.
According to the airline’s recent earnings report, the earlier storm cost the company between $150 million and $200 million in lost revenue — a stark reminder of how extreme weather can rattle even the largest carriers.
